Askas Village

According to one version the village name is due to the first settler who was a skin-bag maker. The village history is lost in the depths of time. No one knows exactly when the village was built and when it was first inhabited. In the village there are a lot of small and large earth ware big jars. This indicates that it was a big wine village. One of the jars it was covered with a thin layer of clay. However, one day someone leaned on it with his hand and the clay fell off revealing the date 1381. The houses are traditionally built entirely with local materials the stone, the clay and the pine-wood balconies from the surrounding mountains with narrow stone pavement streets. The roofs have tiled all kneaded and baked locally with fire places and wood-fire oven.

There are two churches in the village. one is church Timios Prodromos dedicated to the holy Baptist (John)and the other is the church of Timios Stavros dedicated to the holy cross. There is also the country church of Agia Christina that today is called the country church of Agia Paraskevi. The village is connected via road to Palaichori in the east and from there on to Nicosia, to Agros in the south-west and to aAlona, Polystypos and Kyperounta in the west. You can do any activities in Askas Village. You can visit futsal park field play, olive-press visit, icon museum, private village museum. Also, can be arrange with the local owners picking hazelnuts or cherries or olives according to the seasons. You can visit UNESCO heritage byzantine churches nearby, narrowing the area, monasteries (Kykkos, Avakoum, Machairas). Traditional village’s (Agros, Palaichori, Alona, Polystipos, Platres, Omodos).Walking organized nature trails, Troodos geopark, Caledonian and Milomeris Waterfalls, winery’s, traditional workshops in Agros (rose factory, local traditional products) etc

History of Pitharia

PITHARIA is an old renovated two stories stone traditional guest house consist of four luxury suites, each one has his own character and history. It is at the center of the village Askas. All the people of the village including donkeys helped to build the stone house which is over 300 years old. It was really difficult to build the house because there is no road way, but only stone-trail to reach the house. This old house used to be in the pass for many activities.  People…
